WEC Industry Tours bring teachers in contact with local industries. Teachers learn what skills employers value in employees and what education students need to be successful job applicants. In addition, they bring back to their classrooms real world examples of how what they teach is used in industry.
Shire (formerly Baxter Labs) hosted a tour for 14 teachers from 4 Ventura County school districts. These teachers visited labs and learned about modern technologies used in Shire’s research, testing, and production labs. This experience gave teachers new information about career paths within the biotechnology field as well as future opportunities to tour with their classes.
This one week program hosted by the Ventura County Office of Education in cooperation with the WEC provided middle and high school teachers with the experience that they needed to blend the science of unmanned aerial vehicles with their math and science curriculum. Teachers spent a week visiting companies at the forefront of the UAV sector as well as Pt Mugu Naval Air Station.Experts in the field spent two days working with the teachers to help them design classroom curriculum based on UAV science.
